A Story from Gaza… Three Silent Sisters in the Noise of War
Australia
Peace be upon you, my name is Israa, from Gaza.
I write on behalf of my three aunts (Rola, Wafa & Raja) who are deaf, they have always been a source of strength and inspiration for us. Before the war, one of my aunts supported us through her hand embroidery work, and sometimes by giving small courses and working with local organizations. Life was difficult, but we lived with dignity, in a home that gathered us all, with our loving grandmother (the mother of my aunts) caring for us.
But when the war began, everything changed. We lost our home, our livelihood, and our beloved grandmother due to medical complications brought about by diabetes over the 2 years of this genocide. We were displaced 5 times, and each displacement was harsher than the one before. Every time we were forced to flee, we left behind everything we owned and returned to zero, with no shelter and no safety.
The scenes we witnessed during displacement will never be forgotten: bodies and remains lying on the ground, and we could not even cover them. We walked with tears in our eyes and heavy hearts, seeing what no one should ever have to see. We endured hunger, thirst, and sleepless nights on the ground in tents that cannot protect us from the cold or the heat.
We even came under gunfire while trying to escape, and by some miracle, we survived. Those were moments that words cannot truly describe—survival mixed with the deep fear of losing those we love.
We survive on hope, clinging to life as much as we can in the silence that surrounds us.
We may not have a voice… but our pain is loud enough to shake hearts.
We need someone to hear us — not with ears, but with compassion.
Living with a hearing disability amid bombing. Inability to hear danger unlike those around them (noise of bombs & drones can only be felt if loud enough but not heard)
️ They were displaced 5 times and currently living in a tent that is severly damaged and provides little protection from the cold or heat
Her mother was martyred in the war due to lack of medical treatment, her father suffers from similar chronic ailments like high BP
Current renting a land area to pitch their tent on for $120/month with no income
No access to aid, treatment, or consistent food and water. There are no support services, no tools, no safe environments for people with disabilities

$50 – Food for a day for 5 people
